Family-controlled media group Lagardere announced on 31 January that it is to sell its international magazine business to fellow family publisher Hearst Corporation for €651 million in cash.

Family-controlled media group Lagardere announced on 31 January that it is to sell its international magazine business to fellow family publisher Hearst Corporation for €651 million in cash.

The US-based publisher will take control of 102 magazine titles in 15 countries from the US to Hong Kong – a business which had revenues of €774 million last year.

Family-controlled media company Comcast announced on 20 January that it has won the approval of US regulators for its merger with NBC Universal, a deal that was first announced more than a year back.

Comcast will acquire 51% of NBCU, with the remaining being retained by General Electric, which will sell it to Comcast over seven years.

Increasingly, family businesses are facing a rise in litigation and a greater propensity for them to be viewed as celebrities, open to attack from the mass media, unscrupulous advisers and other hostile parties. This is a real threat, and one that must be addressed if businesses are to be effectively passed down the generations.

Whilst a strategy for public relations and litigation are regarded as essential by most successful multinational corporate organisations, family businesses frequently neglect to establish similar functions for their own specific needs.

Linda Johnson Rice, second-generation chairman and CEO of Johnson Publishing Co, has stepped down from her chief executive role, but is remaining as chairman.

Rice's CEO position will is to be taken by Desirée Rogers who served as White House Social Secretary in Barack Obama's administration.

In a statement, JPC said Rogers will be responsible for aligning core business strategies for all brands and would complement Rice's institutional knowledge of the business.

Reliance Broadcast Network, a subsidiary of the family-owned Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Group, announced 18 August it has signed a joint venture agreement with US-based CBS Studios International to provide a new set of TV channels in India.

Reliance Broadcast Network, a subsidiary of the family-owned Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Group, announced 18 August it has signed a joint venture agreement with US-based CBS Studios International to provide a new set of TV channels in India.

Reliance and CBS will both have a 50% equity share in the new company, called BIG CBS Networks, which will initially create three new English language TV channels. The deal is a first for both companies as they attempt to tap into India's growing TV market.
